WHO WILL USE THE APP | SOME PERSONAS
THE CARD SORT
A live open sort and an online sort using Optimal Sort
were conducted. The participants offered important feedback for the language and structure of the app focusing on three key elements:
Community, Strategy, and Resources.

The UX Journey for the Mobile App development of SAFEBASE
Designed to Promote and Facilitate
Community Safety During Unsafe Times

INTRODUCING SAFEBASE
Concept and Development by Margaret Kelly
©
THE GOAL OF THE SAFEBASE APP IS TO PROVIDE A VIRTUAL MEETING SPACE AND PROBLEM-SOLVING
TOOL FOR MEMBERS OF A COMMUNITY TO USE DURING TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY
SUCH AS A NATURAL DIASTER, OR DURING AN EVENT CAUSED BY CRIMINAL OR TERRORIST ACTS
THE RESEARCH
THE INTERVIEWS
The interviews provided the foundation for the development of the app. All of the subjects had
experienced an unexpected life event (and different ones) such as a natural disaster, a terrorist act,
and an inner-city riot. All of the subjects agreed an app could help them navigate the crisis
and overcome the feelings of helplessness, desperation, and anxiety which pervade during these times.
Most importantly, the app could serve as an important communication tool to quickly bring
members of a family or community together, and provide reassurance, instant communication
with loved ones, and practical help and resources to use during "the event".
THE SURVEY
A survey was created in Survey Monkey and 19 people participated.
84% of respondents said they would use an app during times of crisis.
100% interviewees felt when using the app, they would certainly use the suggested features
in the app, such as impending danger notifications, member chat, weather updates,
resource information for food, water, shelter and medical attention.
21% had experienced a natural disaster.
84% had been involved in an auto accident.
63% were in favor of allowing community members access
to their medical records during an emergency, if necessary.

EMPATHY MAPS AND USER FLOWS

The scenarios and flows were created,.
WHO WILL USE THE APP | SOME PERSONAS

Three personas were developed that represent the diversity of the user demographic.
Kate is a married middle manager at a bank and a mother of three. Sam is single and is an IT professional who would use SAFEBASE in a professional and personal capacity.Letty is a precocious nine-year-old whose mom enrolled the family.
Understanding the motivations of the unique personas will help create a more durable app that will be easy to use during a crisis situation.
THE SITE MAP, EMPATHY MAPS, USER FLOWS
From information culled from the interviews and persona development, an initial site map was created with important pages diagrammed. Then scenarios were created with empathy maps for the personas, to understand how the individuals would react, and what they were thinking and feeling during specific scenarios.

the personas.

USER FLOWS
Flows were developed for each persona to show
how they would use the app. This led to the the
wireframe development.
WIREFRAMES
After the User Flows, the Wireframes were developed.
Three different iterations were created.
Check them out at the link below.

STYLE GUIDE
A Style Guide was also developed with the color palette,
using the safe color of blue as the dominant color for the site.
Type specs and buttons for the site were developed keeping in mind ease of use and functionality as being top priorities.
USER TESTING RESULTS
Testers had positive feedback overall, with a few having difficulty with the Community Feed and Member Check-in (Roll Call).
Future iterations will revolve around the Community Feed
which is so important to the app, possibly combining
the out of town members with the local community.
More work on the Page headings is also needed for clarity and directness.“Updates” may be renamed “News” and “Community Feed”may be renamed "Updates".
